It’s 2017. You could still get by 1995-style, scribbling in notebooks and using spreadsheets to track your progress, and if you’re into that then great! However, if you want to take advantage of the awesome technology that’s available today, and bring your smart phone into the mix, then you’ll want to know which apps to download and use. And when it comes to fitness apps, your options are dizzying.
Not to fear though! We’ve used our fair share of fitness apps, and here are the 5 that we think will help you achieve your results the fastest.
Calorie counting works for a lot of people, but it can be tedious. Remembering everything you’ve eaten and how much you worked out is hard to do, and without accurate records it’s hard to know if you’re meeting your goals. MyFitnessPal is a great solution. You can easily put meals into the app, and it automatically calculates calories, macro nutrients and much more. You can also add in your exercise routine, track weight and use their community forums, which is great for support and ideas. This is a great app for anyone wanting to track calories in and out.
Map My Fitness
If you run unfamiliar routes, aren’t a whiz at pacing or want to easily see progress, Map My Fitness is a phenomenal tool to have at your disposal. As you can probably tell from the name, it’s a GPS app that tracks your runs, walks, bike rides and more. It stores data so you can see how far you went, and how fast you did it. It’s amazing for comparing results and seeing how much you’ve improved.
Bodyweight Training: You Are Your Own Gym
You Are Your Own Gym is an app based off of the book by the same name, and it’s great for those days you can’t make it into the Fit Yard, but still want a killer workout. You can choose from 10 week workout plans, that are organized according to skill level, or you can pick and choose individual workouts, with things like Tabatas. It’s really fun, and the workouts are varied and intense. You’ll burn calories, build muscle and be able to do it all on the go without equipment.
The Headspace app takes meditation to a new level. If you’ve never meditated, or you’re not sure if it’s for you, Headspace might change your mind. With preset meditations, where calm and soothing voices walk you through the meditation, and cool features like the ability to see how many days in a row you’ve meditated, this is a great tool to calm down and destress. Reducing stress is a key component of health, and one that’s often overlooked in the modern world, so this app can really help take your fitness routine to the next level.
